Our logo is made up of two components:
- The word ‘CERN’, which is the acronym derived from the Organization's first official title: Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, or European Council for Nuclear Research.
- The interlaced rings, which are a simplified representation of the accelerator chain and the particle tracks.
These two components cannot be altered. No changes can be made to their positioning, scale or typography. It is forbidden to separate them or to use them in another design.
The CERN logo is the property of the Organization. Its use is subject to autorisation.
In order to preserve the strong impact of the logo, the rules for its use set out in this graphic charter must be rigorously implemented.
To make the logo more versatile and flexible, two versions are available: the badge and the outline.
The badge logo
The badge version of the CERN logo must only ever be used on a clean white background and when the CERN blue can be faithfully reproduced.
Accurate reproduction of the CERN blue is essential.

Clear space is the area surrounding the logo that must be kept free of other graphic elements. The minimum required clear space is defined by the measurement “X” as shown. This measurement is equal to 1/4 of the width of the logo.
The minimum size of the logo depends on the mode of reproduction. The aim is to keep the logo readable and clear.
Professional offset printing
The minimum size of the logo is 10mm.
Office digital printing
The minimum size of the logo is 15mm.
The minimum logo size for web usage is 60px.

A lot of thought and effort has gone into determining the perfect relationship between the elements that make up the CERN logo; do not attempt to re-create these elements. Always use the approved artwork and always follow the Design Guidelines when using it.
The badge logo can only be used in Blue. If for some reasons you need to reproduce it in an other colour (ie one colour printing) use the outline version.
Do not place the badge version of the logo on a colour background or on a photo. Do not place any white field around the logo to then place it on a colour background or on a photo.
